In a recent letter from Diane Harkey, she claimed to have done a “bit of research” before supporting Proposition 98.
Proposition 98 would allow current mobile home residents to be covered under rent control protection while they live in their homes. However, upon moving, the rent could increase. New rents could be exorbitant. In such case, homeowners, or their heirs, would have extreme difficulty selling their home for a reasonable price. Many mobile home owners have sunk their life savings into their homes, and the passage of Proposition 98 could be devastating. Think it couldn’t happen? It already HAS, which is one of the reasons we have rent control in Oceanside. Proposition 98 greatly elevates the rights of owners of land and greatly diminishes the rights of other property owners, mobile homeowners in this case.
I voted for Barry Goldwater and every Republican presidential candidate since, but I cannot support Diane Harkey. We need the representation of someone who will do more than the superficial “bit of research” she has done. My neighbors, myself and everyone we can influence (which is a LOT of people) will be working actively and aggressively for the election of Judy Jones for State Assembly.
